Since it's establishment in 1977, the Foundation for Science and Technology has been a registered charity. For many years it was also a registered company. It was converted to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) on 30 December 2022.

As a registered charity, the Foundation is overseen by a Trustee Board chaired by the Rt Hon the Lord Willetts FRS. The Trustee Board is accountable for all of the activities of the Foundation. The governing document of the Foundation is its Constitution (available below).

The Foundation's Chief Executive Gavin Costigan is responsible for delivering the strategy agreed by the Trustee Board with advice from the Council.

The Council is an advisory board with senior representatives from Government, parliament, industry and the research community.

The Foundation also has a Vice-President, the former Chief Executive, Dr Dougal Goodman OBE FREng.
